From link to video in three steps

  1. Step 1

    Paste your landing page

The page you will link from Product Hunt. If your app needs a login, use the public page that shows it best.

  2. Step 2

    Pick widescreen

Choose the promo video size. You get 4 takes in about 5 minutes, each with a different opening and music.

  3. Step 3

Upload it and add the link

Download the take you like in full HD, put it on YouTube and paste the link into your launch gallery.

What Product Hunt needs from your video

Product Hunt does not host video files. It plays a YouTube link in your gallery, so check these before launch day.

Where it goes
Upload it to YouTube, then paste the link into the gallery of your launch.
Who can see it
Public or unlisted on YouTube. A private video will not play.
Shape
Widescreen, 1920×1080. The gallery is landscape, so a vertical video shows up small with black bars.
Length
30 to 60 seconds is what most launches use. People watch it while they decide whether to upvote.
Sound
Many people watch with the sound off, so the words on screen need to tell the story on their own.
Timing
Upload it a day early and play it once from your launch preview to be sure it loads.

Why founders use it for launch day

Your product, not stock clips

The video shows your own landing page, screens and words. No stock footage of people typing on laptops.

Done in an evening

Launch week is busy. You get a finished first draft in about 5 minutes and spend your time picking and tweaking.

The same video everywhere

Switch the same take to a vertical reel for X, LinkedIn and TikTok, so your launch day posts match your gallery.

What a good launch video shows in 30 seconds

Open on the problem in a few words. The first 3 seconds decide whether someone keeps watching, and on launch day they are scrolling past dozens of other products.

Then show the product doing its job. One or two screens are enough. People want to see that it works and what it looks like, not every feature.

Add one line of proof if you have it, like a number of users, a quote or a logo. Then close on the name and the web address.

Leave the long founder story out of the video. Put it in your first comment, where the people who want it will read it.

Before you hit launch

  • Write your tagline first, then make sure the first line of the video says the same thing.
  • Make a vertical version of the same take for your launch day posts on X and LinkedIn.
  • Keep the words on screen short. Most people scroll with the sound muted.
  • Use a frame from the video as one of your gallery images, so the gallery looks like one set.
  • Turn off any cookie banner or pop up you can on the landing page before you paste the link.
  • If you change your pricing or tagline, make a fresh set so the video matches the page.

I'm Masab Farooque, and I build and run UrlToReel myself. Bug reports, feature requests and support emails all come straight to me.

The reel here is one of the 4 it made from my own site, masabfarooque.com, with nothing changed.

Can I upload the MP4 straight to Product Hunt?

Product Hunt plays video from a YouTube link, so upload the file to YouTube first. Public or unlisted both work.

Which size should I download?

The promo video size, 1920×1080. You can also switch the same take to a vertical reel for your social posts.

My app is behind a login. Will it still work?

We can only see public pages. Use your landing page, a public demo or a page with screenshots of the app.

Can I add a voice over?

Yes. A natural voice over costs 2 credits for all 4 takes from one link. Plenty of launch videos work well with just music and text.

What does it cost?

Making and editing is free. A full HD download with no watermark uses 1 credit. Credits are 2 for $5 or 5 for $10 and never expire.

Can I use the video anywhere else?

Yes. The same video works on your own site, in your launch email, on YouTube and in a pitch deck.

Try it on your own site

It's free until you download, and it takes about 5 minutes.
